Light for a living terrarium: plan beyond the photograph

Light for a living terrarium: plan beyond the photograph

A terrarium can look beautifully illuminated in a photograph and still sit in an unsuitable place for the rest of the day. Camera exposure, a brief shaft of sunlight and a room light used only in the evening all complicate the picture. Plan the everyday conditions first. The aim is a display you can enjoy without continually moving it between a decorative position and a separate place where the plants can grow.

Make a simple light map

University of Minnesota Extension recommends assessing the quality and duration of available light before selecting plants. Too little light can lead to elongated growth and leaf loss; excessive light can bleach or scorch foliage. These symptoms are clues rather than a diagnosis by themselves. Different plants need different conditions, so “tropical” and “indoor” are not sufficiently precise instructions for deciding where a particular specimen belongs.

Choose two possible positions and photograph each in the morning, around midday and later in the afternoon. Note direct sun, shading from buildings, curtains and the usual use of room lighting. Repeat on a day when you are at home long enough to notice changes. This informal map will not replace a calibrated light measurement, but it creates a much better description to share with a nursery than saying that the room feels bright.

Think at leaf level

Sketch where the main leaves will sit, not just where the vessel will stand. A deep shelf, tall background plant or large piece of driftwood may shade part of the composition. Consider whether the featured plant will remain visible when its neighbours grow. Leave a clear viewing angle and avoid choosing every specimen to occupy the same central position. A little open space makes it easier to see both the design and changes in individual plants.

Use Macodes petola and Begonia olivacea as separate research starting points if their foliage appeals to you. Confirm each plant's needs and the suitability of your planned location before combining them. The catalogue names do not establish one shared light level. Ask for the nursery's growing context and explain whether your proposed setting is a room, a glazed cabinet or a planted terrarium.

When a grow light helps

Supplemental lighting can make a display possible where daylight is insufficient. The RHS explains that artificial lighting must provide an appropriate intensity and duration, and that the distance from the lamp matters. Choose equipment using its horticultural specifications and manufacturer guidance, rather than brightness to the human eye alone. A light that flatters foliage for a few evening hours is not automatically an adequate growing light.

Plan the equipment as part of the furniture. Decide where the timer, cable and controls can sit safely away from splashes and where you can reach them without moving the vessel. Check the manufacturer's instructions for moisture exposure, mounting and clearance. Keep a record of the light model, distance and daily schedule. There is no single lamp distance or number of hours that can be prescribed responsibly for every product and mixed collection.

Review growth before redesigning

Take a baseline photograph when the planting is settled, then compare new growth over time. If something changes, review the light map alongside watering, temperature and recent moves. Adjust one controllable factor at a time where practical and note the date. Do not chase a dramatic colour from an edited photograph by repeatedly increasing light. A convincing display is built around sustained healthy growth, with the lighting serving both the living plants and the way you enjoy them.
