Cyrtosperma hambalii: The Exotic ‘Rabbit Ear’ Paludarium Centerpiece

Overview & Origins

Bring a piece of untouched tropical wilderness into your collection. Native to the low-altitude forest streams and shaded swamps of West Papua (New Guinea), Cyrtosperma hambalii is an exceptional and rare perennial member of the Araceae (aroid) family. It was officially described in 2015 by botanists Alistair Hay and A. Dearden, and named in honor of the renowned Indonesian plant collector and botanist, Gregori Hambali.

Botanical Features & Identification

Unlike typical houseplants, this species is a helophyte (a marsh or water-dwelling plant). It is instantly identifiable by its highly unusual “rabbit ear” (sagittate to hastate) leaf shape, prominent venation, and long, elegant peduncles. In mature specimens, the distinctively structured foliage creates an architectural, wild aesthetic that stands out in any rare plant collection.

Perfect for Terrariums & Paludariums

Because it naturally grows in streams and water reservoirs, Cyrtosperma hambalii is the ultimate centerpiece for high-end paludariums, large terrariums, and ripariums. It thrives as an emergent plant, meaning its root system loves to be completely submerged while its spectacular foliage rises above the water line.

Comprehensive Care Guide

  • Lighting: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Protect the leaves from harsh, direct sun to prevent scorching and maintain their deep green coloration.

  • Watering & Humidity: This plant requires “wet feet” and should never be allowed to dry out. It can be grown hydroponically or kept sitting in a water reservoir. It demands high ambient humidity (70%+) to mimic its native Papuan swamp environment.

  • Potting & Repotting: Grow in inorganic media or a highly moisture-retentive aquatic mix. Crucial setup tip: When repotting, ensure the foundational stem is firmly seated inside the pot and media—never left exposed or hovering above the soil line—to correctly anchor the plant and encourage strong aquatic root development. We highly recommend planting this in our JB Greens Premium Potting Media for optimal moisture retention and structural support.

  • Nutrient Requirements: As a water-dwelling plant, it responds excellently to consistent, low-dose feeding. Boost its growth, leaf size, and structural integrity with JB Greens Plant Tonics, applied directly to the water reservoir or growing media during the active growing season.
