Elevate your indoor oasis with the sophisticated beauty of Pellionia repens, a stunning trailing evergreen that brings the lush, mysterious allure of the Southeast Asian rainforest directly to your home. Known widely as the Trailing Watermelon Begonia, this plant is not a true Begonia, but rather a captivating member of the Urticaceae family.
Scientific Name: Pellionia repens (also classified as Procris repens).
Taxonomic History: First described by João de Loureiro in 1790 as Polychroa repens. The genus name, Pellionia, honors the French naval officer and explorer Alphonse Odet Pellion (1796–1868).
Identification: Look for its distinctively fleshy, trailing stems that root at the nodes. The leaves are elliptic to oblong with wavy, serrated edges. Its most striking feature is the “watermelon-rind” patterning: a mosaic of dark green, bronze, or purple edges with a lighter, silver-green or creamy central band.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh, direct sun, which can scorch the delicate foliage. A shaded spot or a north-facing window is perfect.
Watering: Maintain consistent moisture. The soil should be kept damp, similar to a wrung-out sponge. Avoid letting the pot sit in water, as this can lead to root rot.
Humidity: This is a moisture-loving species! Thrive in high-humidity environments (60–80%). They are excellent candidates for terrariums and paludariums.
Nutrient Requirements: Use a balanced, water-soluble liquid fertilizer at half-strength once every four weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). For optimal health, pair this with the JB Greens Premium Plant Tonic, formulated to provide essential micronutrients that enhance the plant’s natural variegation.
Potting & Soil: Use a well-draining, rich, and aerated potting medium. We highly recommend the JB Greens Specialized Terrarium & Tropical Mix, which provides the perfect balance of moisture retention and root aeration to ensure your Pellionia thrives.
Terrariums & Paludariums: Its prostrate, creeping habit makes it an elite choice for a foreground ground cover. It can even shingle up a moist background or wood feature, creating a naturalistic, jungle-floor effect.
Features: Beyond its striking foliage, when in flower, the plant produces clusters that can release “smoke-like” clouds of pollen when disturbed, earning it the nickname “Gunpowder Plant.”
Repotting: Only repot every 2–3 years, as this species often prefers being slightly pot-bound. Ensure your new pot has excellent drainage.
Propagation: Easily propagated by stem cuttings. Simply place a healthy stem in moist soil or water, ensuring at least one node is submerged.
At JB Greens, we believe your rare tropical collection deserves the finest care. Beyond providing elite-quality Pellionia repens, we offer:
JB Greens Premium Potting Media: Specifically designed for tropical moisture-lovers, our mix prevents root compaction and provides the vital drainage needed for Pellionia.
JB Greens Plant Tonics: Give your plants the professional edge. Our tonic is specifically blended to support vibrant leaf coloration and vigorous rooting, helping your plants look their best for catalog and display.
