Appearance: The Black Velvet Eastern Panama Anthurium crossed with Docblock is famed for its strikingly dark, almost black, velvety leaves. New leaves emerge as rosy red that deepen into a silky brown before hardening into thick, nearly black foliage. Leaves are compact, often thicker than other velvet Anthuriums, and lack the red/pink coloration on the undersides that is sometimes seen in close relatives like Anthurium papillilaminum. The veins are pale and thin, particularly near the sinus, and mature plants typically exhibit more basal veins than most papillilaminum—usually five or more.

Origins/Natural Habitat: This species is native to the humid, tropical understory forests of Eastern Panama, where it receives filtered sunlight and experiences consistently high humidity.

Caring for Black Velvet Eastern Panama Anthurium * Docblock Anthurium
Light
Thrives in bright, indirect or filtered light—direct sunlight will scorch the leaves. Mimic understory rainforest conditions by keeping it near an east-facing window or several feet from a south/west-facing window.

Tolerates lower light, but this can stunt growth and reduce blooming.

Temperature & Humidity
Prefers warm conditions—optimal temperatures are 65°-85°F (18°-29°C). Avoid letting it drop below 60°F (16°C).

Humidity should be high—ideally 60%-90% like tropical rainforests. Use a humidifier or pebble tray to increase humidity if needed.

Watering
Likes evenly moist substrate but is sensitive to both overwatering and underwatering. Use well-draining potting media such as aroid mix or semi-hydroponics in pon.

Water when top inch of soil is dry; do not let the roots sit in water or the substrate dry out completely.

Feeding
Fertilize monthly during growing season using a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Flowering varieties can benefit from slightly more phosphorus.

Ventilation & Placement
Good air circulation is important—avoid stagnant air and keep near a fan or open window if indoors.

Place in a spot with at least 6 hours of indirect sunlight (can handle tent setups for dedicated growers).

Adaptability
Adapts well to indoor environments, especially under stable warm and humid conditions. Can acclimate to grow tents, self-watering planters, and pon media.

Slightly more challenging to keep leaves flawless than some velvet Anthuriums, but not as fussy as the most sensitive types (e.g., A. dressleri or kunayalense).

Susceptible to a “crash” after cutting, but generally robust under stable care regimes.

Key Tips
Regularly check for pests and wipe down leaves—velvet leaves attract dust.

Protect from cold drafts, direct sunlight, and dry indoor environments.

If propagating or cutting, monitor for stress and possible crashes after division.

Black Velvet Eastern Panama Anthurium cross with Dockblock is a favorite for collectors due to its dramatic foliage and compact growth—care is similar to other velvet Anthuriums, but attention to humidity and light is crucial for best rest results.
