Ficus deltoidea (Sumatran Form)

Elevate your rare plant collection with the Sumatran variant of Ficus deltoidea, highly sought after for its captivating foliage and unique growth habits. Commonly known as the Mistletoe Fig, this rare tropical shrub is a versatile, striking addition to any indoor jungle, terrarium, or paludarium.

Taxonomy & Origin

Botanical Name Ficus deltoidea Jack
Family Moraceae
Origin Sumatra, Indonesia (Southeast Asia)
Discovered By William Jack (Scottish botanist)

The species was first scientifically documented and named by the Scottish botanist William Jack in the early 19th century, earning its official botanical designation Ficus deltoidea Jack. While the species is native to the high-humidity rainforests across Southeast Asia, this specific, highly desirable ecotype hails directly from Sumatra.

Botanical Features & Identification

Ficus deltoidea is a slow-growing evergreen shrub that often begins its life cycle as an epiphyte in the wild, clinging to the branches of larger trees before its roots eventually reach the forest floor.

  • Distinctive Foliage: The primary identification method for this species is its unique deltoid (spoon-shaped or triangular) leaves. The thick, leathery upper surface is a glossy dark green, while the underside reveals a striking golden-yellow hue marked with specialized, waxy black glandular spots.

  • Ornamental Figs: It is one of the very few Ficus species that will readily and consistently produce fruits indoors. The plant yields small, spherical figs that transition from pale green to a rich orange, red, or dark purple as they mature, creating a beautiful contrast against the foliage.

Uses in Terrariums & Paludariums

Because it naturally thrives as an epiphyte in humid jungle canopies, the Sumatran Ficus deltoidea is an exceptional choice for professional glass enclosures.

Its slow growth rate, compact footprint, and woody structural stems make it a perfect mid-ground or background focal point. It can be planted terrestrially or mounted directly onto hardscape (wood or background panels) in both terrariums and paludariums, bringing an authentic, layered rainforest aesthetic to your ecosystem.

Cultivation & Care Guide

  • Lighting Requirements: Thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate gentle morning sun, but protect it from harsh, direct afternoon exposure which can scorch its leathery leaves.

  • Watering Requirements: Allow the top 1 to 2 inches of the soil to dry out completely before watering again. Because of its naturally epiphytic roots, it is highly susceptible to root rot if left sitting in stagnant water.

  • Humidity Requirements: Requires moderate to high humidity (60% to 80%+) to successfully replicate its native Sumatran habitat.

  • Potting & Repotting: A light, airy, and rapidly draining substrate is mandatory. Repot only every 2 to 3 years when the plant becomes genuinely rootbound. For optimal root health and proper anatomical placement, we highly recommend potting this species using our specialized JB Greens Premium Potting Media. Our mix is expertly formulated for rare tropicals to prevent compaction and ensure maximum aeration.

  • Nutrient Requirements: Feed monthly during the active growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, high-quality fertilizer. To enhance foliage gloss and encourage prolific fig production, routinely apply our proprietary JB Greens Plant Tonics, designed specifically for the complex nutritional needs of rare tropical botanicals.
