Leea Sp also known as West Indian Holly or Red Leea, is a tropical evergreen shrub admired for its striking foliage and unique coloration. It belongs to the Vitaceae family and is native to the rainforests of Borneo and Malaysia, thriving as an understory plant under the canopy of bigger trees.

Foliage: The plant features large, pinnate leaves with lanceolate leaflets. New leaflets emerge a bright crimson, then gradually develop a deep, bronzy green color with a prominent white or silvery central stripe as they mature. The leaves are soft, velvet-like, and can become purplish-red underneath, creating a beautiful and ornamental appearance.

Growth Habit: Leea amabilis has a compact, upright growth habit and can grow to around 60cm in one year under ideal conditions. The red stems further add to its decorative value.

Toxicity: The plant is considered poisonous and may cause skin irritation. Its leaves should not be consumed or handled without care.

Caring for Leea Sp
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light or partial shade. It can tolerate some direct sunlight but thrives when given filtered or dappled light, mimicking the shade of forest canopies. Direct sunlight can cause leaf fading or yellowing.

Water: Likes consistently moist, but not soggy soil. Water when the top inch feels slightly dry, using distilled or rainwater for best results. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely. Overwatering can lead to root rot.

Humidity: High humidity (70-100%) is essential. Mist leaves regularly and/or place the pot on a tray with moist pebbles. In dry indoor climates, consider using a humidifier or a terrarium environment.

Temperature: Thrives in warm temperatures, ideally 20-25°C (68-77°F). Temperatures below 16°C (60°F) can harm the plant, leading to slowed growth or leaf drop. Avoid cold drafts and unheated rooms.

Soil: Plant in a free-draining, loose, rich potting mix. An ideal mixture is one part leaf soil, one part sod land, one part coarse sand or perlite, and one part peat. Soil pH should be slightly acidic (5.5-6.8).

Fertilizer: During active growth (spring to autumn), feed with a balanced, soluble fertilizer every two weeks for lush growth. Organic fertilizers are also effective.

Pruning: Prune to maintain a bushy, compact shape and remove any leggy or damaged growth. This promotes fuller, healthier foliage.

Propagation: Can be propagated through stem cuttings.

Repotting: Repot in spring into a larger container if necessary. For established plants, replacing the top layer of soil each year is usually sufficient.

Adaptability
Leea Sp is generally adaptable as a houseplant if its tropical needs are met. It’s considered suitable for beginners due to its forgiving nature with regard to missed waterings or slight light variations, though it strongly prefers stable warmth and humidity. In less ideal conditions (such as low humidity or cool temperatures), it may show stunted growth or leaf drop but typically recovers when proper care is restored.
