An exquisite miniature fern that brings the intricate textures of the Southeast Asian rainforest straight into your glass enclosure. Commonly known as the “Mini Bolbitis” or “Baby Leaf Bolbitis,” this sought-after cultivar is prized for its delicate, parsley-like foliage and slow-creeping growth habit.

Botanical Profile & History

  • Scientific Name: Bolbitis heteroclita ‘Difformis’ (Syn: Edanyoa difformis)

  • Family: Dryopteridaceae (Wood fern family)

  • Origin & Habitat: Tropical Asia. The ‘Difformis’ variant was originally discovered and described from the Philippine island of Negros. In the wild, it grows as a terrestrial, lithophytic (on rocks), or epiphytic fern along shaded, humid streams in tropical rainforests.

  • Taxonomy & Discovery: The species Bolbitis heteroclita was originally named by 19th-century botanist Carl Borivoj Presl (C. Presl) and later placed into the genus Bolbitis by Chinese botanist Ren-Chang Ching.

Special Features & Identification

Unlike the standard Bolbitis heteroclita, the ‘Difformis’ cultivar is a true dwarf. You can identify it by its vibrant, deep green fronds that are deeply lobed and heavily divided, giving it a lush, lacy appearance. It features a creeping green rhizome (a horizontal botanical stem) from which the delicate leaves emerge. It is a slow-growing perennial that forms a dense, low-lying carpet roughly 5 to 10 cm in height when grown emersed.

Care & Cultivation Guide

Ideal Enclosures (Terrariums & Paludariums)

This miniature fern is a masterpiece plant for professional glass terrariums, vivariums, and paludariums. Because it demands constant moisture and high humidity to keep its delicate leaves from crisping, it thrives in enclosed environments. It can be cultivated entirely submersed (underwater in aquariums) or emersed (in the humid air of a terrarium).

When building a display, Bolbitis looks highly attractive mounted directly onto driftwood, cork bark, or porous dragon stone, where its rhizomes can naturally grip the hardscape.

Lighting Requirements

Low to Moderate, Indirect Light. In its natural habitat, it grows in the shaded understory. Direct sunlight will quickly scorch the delicate miniature fronds. Use standard LED terrarium or aquarium lighting, keeping the intensity moderate.

Water & Humidity

  • Watering: Requires constant moisture. If grown terrestrially, the substrate should never be allowed to dry out completely. It prefers soft, slightly acidic water (distilled or reverse osmosis water is ideal to prevent mineral buildup on the leaves).

  • Humidity: Needs exceptionally high humidity (80% to 100%) to thrive outside of water.

Potting & Substrate

As an epiphyte, burying the horizontal rhizome deep in dense soil is a fatal mistake—it will rot. The rhizome must remain above the substrate or be attached to hardscape.

If potting, it requires a highly aerated, moisture-retentive, and well-draining mix. We highly recommend planting it atop our premium JB Greens Custom Potting Media available at www.jbgreens.com, which is expertly formulated to prevent root suffocation while maintaining the exact moisture balance rare tropical ferns require.

Nutrient Requirements

Ferns are light feeders. Excessive synthetic fertilizers can burn their delicate roots and leaves. To encourage lush, vibrant green growth without the risk of burning, apply a highly diluted, gentle foliar spray or substrate drench using the specialized JB Greens Plant Tonics, available directly on www.jbgreens.com. Apply sparingly once every 4 to 6 weeks during active growth.

Repotting & Maintenance

Because of its exceptionally slow growth rate, repotting is rarely necessary. You will only need to intervene if the creeping rhizome outgrows its mount or terrarium space. Maintenance simply involves using sterile aquascaping scissors to trim away any older, browning fronds to direct the plant’s energy into new growth.
