Goodyera pusilla ‘Red’ — The Dwarf Jewel Orchid
Unlike most orchids that are prized solely for their blooms, the Jewel Orchid is cultivated for its mesmerizing foliage. Goodyera pusilla ‘Red’ is a rare, miniature terrestrial orchid that brings the delicate beauty of the Southeast Asian forest floor directly into the modern collection. Its leaves shimmer like woven metallic thread under the right light, making it a standout specimen for serious indoor growers.
Taxonomy & Discovery
-
Family: Orchidaceae
-
Subtribe: Goodyerinae
-
Botanical Name: Goodyera pusilla Blume (1858)
The genus Goodyera was first systematically described by the renowned German-Dutch botanist Dr. Carl Ludwig Blume in 1858. Named to honor the English botanist John Goodyer, the genus contains some of the most sought-after terrestrial orchids in the world.
Natural Habitat
Goodyera pusilla is a geophytic (terrestrial) orchid native to the tropical and lower montane forests of Northeast and Southeast Asia, with prominent populations across Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, and New Guinea. It thrives in dense shade along the banks of perennial mountain streams, growing directly in the loose humus, leaf litter, and mossy sandstone soils at altitudes ranging from sea level up to 1,000 meters.
Identification & Features
As a dwarf species, Goodyera pusilla remains compact, typically reaching only 3 to 20 cm in height with a creeping rhizome habit.
-
Foliage: The ‘Red’ form is particularly striking. The ovate to elliptic leaves (2–6 cm long) emerge as a vivid green and mature into a deep, dark reddish-green. The true spectacle is the venation: an intense silvery-light midrib is flanked by an intricate network of glowing, copper-to-reddish veins that catch the light like fine jewelry.

Blooms: While the foliage is the main attraction, this orchid periodically produces a 5–7.5 cm raceme featuring small, delicate, asymmetrical white flowers. Many professional growers choose to snip the flower spikes early to redirect the plant’s energy back into its spectacular leaf production.
Professional Care Guide
To keep Goodyera pusilla ‘Red’ thriving, the goal is to replicate the stable, humid, and shaded environment of a tropical forest floor.
Lighting Requirements
Low to Medium Indirect Light. In its native habitat, this plant grows under heavy forest canopies. It requires deep shade to dappled light. Never expose this plant to direct sunlight, which will rapidly bleach the vivid leaf colors, burn the foliage, and dry out the delicate root system.
Watering & Moisture
The roots of terrestrial jewel orchids are covered in fine root hairs that must never dry out completely, yet they are highly susceptible to root rot if left sitting in water.
-
Technique: Water only when the top layer of the substrate feels slightly dry to the touch.
-
Water Quality: Always use rainwater, reverse osmosis (RO), or distilled water. Jewel orchids are highly sensitive to the heavy minerals and chlorine found in tap water.
Humidity & Temperature
-
Humidity: Requires consistent high humidity (70% to 90%) coupled with gentle, stagnant-free air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
-
Temperature: Prefers intermediate to warm conditions, ideally between 17°C and 25°C (62°F to 77°F).
Potting & Substrate
Because the creeping rhizome produces a shallow, minimal root system, this plant requires a highly aerated, well-draining substrate that retains moisture without waterlogging.
For Best Results: We highly recommend potting this rare specimen in JB Greens Premium Orchid Potting Media. Our specialized blend ensures the perfect balance of moisture retention and oxygen exchange, keeping the delicate hairy roots structurally secure inside the pot while preventing rot.
Nutrient Requirements
Jewel orchids are very light feeders. Heavy chemical fertilizers will easily burn their root systems.
Feeding: Apply JB Greens Organic Plant Tonics diluted to 1/4 strength once a month during active growth. Our tonics provide the gentle, slow-release micronutrients required to maintain the vivid red and silver venation of the leaves.
Repotting
Repot only every 1 to 2 years, or when the substrate begins to break down and lose its airy texture. Use shallow, small pots; a tight root space encourages healthier growth and prevents excess moisture accumulation in the soil.
Goodyera pusilla ‘Red’ is the ultimate collector’s plant for enclosed glass ecosystems.
-
Terrariums: Its miniature size, creeping growth habit, and absolute love for high humidity and low light make it a flawless candidate for the shaded foreground of a cylindrical or geometric glass terrarium.
Black Jungle Terrarium Supply -
Paludariums: Plant it slightly elevated above the water line on a mossy rock or piece of driftwood where it can absorb ambient moisture without its roots sitting in the aquatic zone.
