Begonia Black Forest

Bring the mystery and elegance of a tropical forest floor into your home with the Begonia ‘Black Forest’. A striking cultivar that commands attention, this plant is defined by its deep, near-black foliage speckled with ethereal, silver-white polka dots and dramatic, deep burgundy undersides. It is more than just a houseplant; it is a living piece of art.

Features & Speciality

• Visual Drama: The dark, asymmetrical leaves provide a high-contrast backdrop to the metallic silver spots, making it an architectural masterpiece.

• Unique Foliage: The leaves often feature small, tooth-like serrated edges, adding texture to its sophisticated look.

• Flowering: Under the right conditions, it produces delicate, pale pink or white flowers, adding a touch of softness to its bold aesthetic.

Plant Care Guide

• Lighting: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh, direct afternoon sun, which can scorch its delicate, dark leaves. An east or west-facing window with sheer curtains is perfect.

• Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Water when the top 2 cm of the soil feels dry. Pro Tip: Use bottom-watering to avoid getting moisture on the leaves, which helps prevent powdery mildew.

• Humidity: This tropical beauty loves high humidity (70–90%). It is an ideal candidate for bathrooms, kitchens, or indoor greenhouses. If your home is dry, use a humidifier or a pebble tray to create a cozy, moist microclimate.

• Temperature: Keep it comfortable between 18°C and 26°C. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 13°C.

• Potting & Soil: Use a light, airy, and well-draining substrate. We highly recommend using a premium JB Greens Tropical Mix to ensure roots have the oxygen they need while retaining the right amount of moisture.

Terrarium & Paludarium Suitability

Because of its love for humidity and its moderate growth rate, the Begonia ‘Black Forest’ is a spectacular choice for larger, high-humidity terrariums and paludarium setups. It acts as a stunning focal point, bringing a “jungle floor” aesthetic to your glass-enclosed display.

Expert Tips for Success

• Nutrition: Use a high-quality JB Greens Plant Tonic during the growing season (spring and summer) at half-strength every 3–4 weeks to support lush, vibrant growth.

• Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when the root system fills its current home. Always move to a pot just one size larger to maintain healthy root-to-soil ratios.

• Maintenance: Regularly remove dead or yellowing leaves to keep the plant’s energy focused on new, healthy growth.
