Licuala sp. ‘Mapu’, also referred to as Licuala mattanensis var. paucisecta or simply ‘Mapu’, is a highly distinctive and rare fan palm native to the rainforests of Kalimantan (Borneo), Indonesia. This palm is known for its beautiful, tesselated foliage featuring green leaves with greenish-yellow blotches distributed in a rectangular, radial pattern. Mature plants develop slender trunks that may eventually reach up to 3m tall, though most are kept as compact, small palms, making them ideal for cozy, shaded garden settings or as container specimens indoors. The leaves are notably pleated and arranged in striking fans.

Growing Conditions
Native Habitat: Deep shade in tropical lowland rainforests, particularly in regions with consistently high humidity and rainfall.

Light: Prefers deep to partial shade. Direct sun can damage the delicate leaves, so it is best grown under canopy or indoors with bright, indirect light.

Soil: Rich, well-drained, slightly acidic soil is ideal. Highly organic, moisture-retentive but not waterlogged soils simulate its natural rainforest environment.

Humidity: Requires high humidity year-round for best growth. Dry air or exposure to winds can cause leaf damage.

Temperature: A minimum temperature of 20°C is required for healthy growth. It cannot tolerate cold snaps or frost; best suited for tropical/subtropical climates (USDA Zone 10b and warmer).

Water: Appreciates consistently moist soil but dislikes waterlogging. Water regularly, ensuring drainage; never allow soil to fully dry out.

Fertilizer: Apply a weak dose of balanced liquid fertilizer during active growth seasons (spring to autumn). Fertilize less frequently due to slow growth rate.

Care Guide
Cleaning: Gently wipe the leaves with a damp, soft cloth to remove dust. Leaves are very tender; avoid harsh cleaning products and physical scrubbing.

Pruning: Remove dead leaves carefully at the base to keep the plant healthy and encourage new growth.

Repotting: Young plants adapt well to pots; use a container with good drainage holes and repot every few years as the palm slowly grows.

Pests: Generally pest-resistant if humidity and shade requirements are met, though mealybugs or spider mites may appear in unfavorable indoor conditions.

Propagation: Usually grown from seeds, though germination is slow. Seeds of ‘Mapu’ are described as narrow and falcate, requiring warmth and humidity to sprout.

Adaptability
Licuala sp. ‘Mapu’ is slow-growing and considered difficult to cultivate outdoors away from its native climate. It adapts best in controlled environments where humidity, shade, and warmth can be maintained, such as greenhouses or shaded garden corners. In drier regions or where humidity drops, the palm may suffer leaf tip burn, reduced growth, or even leaf drop. It does not tolerate drought, cold, or direct harsh sunlight.

Growth Rate
This palm is slow-growing, often remaining compact for several years before attaining trunk height. It rarely exceeds 3m even in optimal conditions; most cultivated specimens remain much smaller. Patience is essential, as dramatic growth is uncommon outside of wild rainforest environments.

In summary, Licuala sp. ‘Mapu’ is a rare, highly ornamental palm best suited to warm, humid, shaded settings; it is slow to grow and requires careful, attentive maintenance of moisture, humidity, and protection from cold or direct sun for optimal health.
