Dendrobium jacobsonii is a striking miniature epiphytic orchid species celebrated for its vibrant, pendulous flowers and compact growth habit.

Detailed Description

This cold-growing orchid forms clustered pseudobulbs reaching up to 30 cm tall, often producing keikis (plantlets) along the sides for natural propagation. The stems bear distichous leaves, 1.0-1.8 cm long, with lower ones quickly deciduous and upper ones persistent. In spring, it produces short inflorescences bearing one to rarely two hanging flowers, each about 2.8 cm across, with all floral parts uniformly bright orange to scarlet-red and sharply pointed tips; the lip thickens at the apex.

Growing Conditions

Dendrobium jacobsonii thrives in cool, high-elevation conditions mimicking alpine rainforests at 2300-3000 m, with small exposed trees and frequent drizzle. Optimal light is 25,000-35,000 lux. Daytime temperatures average 14-16°C year-round, dropping to 5-7°C at night for a 7-9°C diurnal swing. Humidity stays at 70-80% most of the year, reducing to 50% in winter. Use loose, fast-draining media like tree fern slabs, cork, or small pots; repot only when new roots emerge.

Care Requirements

Water frequently during active growth (spring to autumn) to prevent full drying, then reduce in late autumn and winter—allow slight drying between waterings but avoid prolonged dryness. Fertilize weekly or biweekly with 1/4-1/2 strength balanced orchid formula year-round, easing off in winter. Provide strong air movement to mimic natural breezy conditions.

Adaptability

As a cool-growing miniature, it adapts well to cultivation on mounts or in small pots but demands consistent cold nights and intermediate-to-bright light; warmer conditions hinder growth and blooming. It’s somewhat forgiving of brief dry spells in dormancy but intolerant of soggy roots or high heat, making it suited to controlled cool greenhouses rather than typical warm orchid setups.

In summary, success with Dendrobium jacobsonii hinges on replicating its cool, misty highland origins through precise temperature drops, ample light, and moderated winter watering for reliable spring blooms.
