Labisia sp. “Fuchsia” is a compact, rhizomatous understory plant from the family Primulaceae, known for its glossy, dark‑green foliage and interesting, compact growth habit. It is typically grown as an ornamental foliage plant in terrariums, vivariums, or shaded indoor setups rather than for showy flowers like the familiar garden fuchsia (Fuchsia spp.).

Detailed description

  • Growth habit: Forms a low, creeping clump from short, thick rhizomes, with stems that stay largely upright but rarely get tall, making it suitable for shallow containers or foreground use in enclosures.
  • Leaves: Lance‑ to oval‑shaped, with a slightly leathery texture, prominent central veins, and a dark‑green upper surface that can have a faintly glossy sheen; the undersides are paler and may show lighter venation.
  • Stem and internodes: Short internodes keep the plant dense; new shoots emerge from the base and along the rhizome, giving a bushy appearance over time.
  • Flowers / inflorescence: When it does bloom, the flowers are small, inconspicuous, and usually borne on short spikes or axillary clusters; they are not the main ornamental feature and tend to be greenish or pale‑coloured rather than showy.

Care requirements

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect or filtered light; it tolerates low light but will grow slower and may become leggy. Avoid direct hot sun, which can scorch leaves or cause bleaching.
  • Water and humidity: Likes consistently moist (but not waterlogged) medium; the top layer can dry slightly between waterings, but the plant should never be left bone‑dry for long. It thrives in high ambient humidity, making it well‑suited to terrariums or enclosed containers.
  • Temperature: Performs best in warm, stable conditions; it generally dislikes strong temperature swings, cold drafts, or prolonged exposure to cool nights. Avoid very hot, dry spots such as near heaters or air‑conditioning vents.
  • Fertilizer: Responds well to light, regular feeding with a balanced, water‑soluble or organic fertilizer at half or quarter strength, applied every few weeks during active growth. Over‑fertilizing can burn the roots or cause leaf tip burn.

Adaptability and habit

  • Adaptability: Fairly adaptable to different micro‑climates as long as humidity and moisture are kept steady; it can adjust to lower light if growth is accepted as slower, and it can tolerate some shade better than drought or extreme dryness.
  • Media and root zone: Prefers a light, airy, humus‑rich mix that drains well but retains moisture, such as a blend of sphagnum moss, perlite, coco‑fiber, and a small amount of organic soil or leaf litter. It does not tolerate heavy, compacted soils that stay soggy.
  • Behavior in containers: Grows slowly but steadily, forming a tight clump over time; it roots easily at nodes that touch the medium, which helps it spread gently across the surface of the pot or vivarium floor.

Growing conditions summary

  • Light: Bright, indirect or filtered light; avoid strong direct sun.
  • Humidity: High to moderate; best in enclosed or semi‑enclosed setups where air does not dry out rapidly.
  • Temperature: Warm, stable range; avoid cold drafts and overheated, dry spots.
  • Water: Keep medium evenly moist but not soggy; allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Soil / medium: Light, well‑aerated, humus‑rich mix with good moisture retention and drainage.
  • Fertilizer: Light, regular feeding during active growth, diluted to avoid root burn.
