Solanum evolvulifolium is a small, trailing or climbing epiphytic vine in the nightshade family (Solanaceae), native to tropical Central and South America and often grown as a terrarium or greenhouse plant. It is prized for its delicate foliage and compact habit rather than showy flowers.

Solanum evolvulifolium is a slender, vine‑like species with wiry stems that either trail over branches or climb on supports in its natural habitat. The leaves are small, usually up to about 3–5 cm long and 2–3 cm wide, thin‑textured, and often oval to slightly heart‑shaped, giving it a neat, fine‑scale appearance. In some forms the young leaves may show light‑green venation and faint color‑ blotches, maturing to a more uniform green or bronze‑tinted green.

The inflorescences are long and many‑flowered, bearing numerous tiny flowers, each around 1 cm across, in shades of green, white, or pale pink. The overall plant remains compact, with a spread of about 25–30 cm, making it suitable as a hanging or cascading plant rather than a large climber.

Care requirements

Solanum evolvulifolium is generally considered easy‑to‑grow once its humidity and watering needs are met. In cultivation it is often mounted on cork bark or grown in small baskets filled with an airy, epiphytic substrate such as sphagnum moss mixed with perlite and fine orchid bark, which allows good drainage and aeration.Watering: Keep the medium or mount consistently moist but not soggy. If mounted on cork, daily misting or frequent light watering is recommended, especially in warm weather. In pots with a well‑drained mix, water when the top layer of the medium just starts to dry out, avoiding prolonged dryness.

  • Light: Provide moderate, indirect light or dappled shade, similar to a bright understory or greenhouse setting. Strong direct sun, especially in hot climates, can scorch the thin leaves.

  • Humidity and air movement: This species likes high humidity (around 60–80%) but requires good air circulation, especially in enclosed environments like terrariums, to prevent fungal issues.

Adaptability and hardiness

Solanum evolvulifolium is most at home in a warm, moist environment rather than as a typical outdoor bedding plant. It is adapted to tropical and subtropical forest conditions, including cloud‑forest edges and humid lowlands, typically at elevations from roughly 500–2,500 m, where nights are cool but not freezing and days are warm.

In cultivation it is usually kept in an intermediate‑to‑warm greenhouse, conservatory, or terrarium, with nighttime minimums around 14–18°C and daytime temperatures roughly 23–30°C. It can tolerate temperatures as low as about 18–26°C in closed setups, but prolonged cold or frost will damage or kill the plant. Indoors on a windowsill it can grow if humidity is high and it is not placed in drafty, very dry air.

Growing conditions summary

Aspect Preferred conditions for Solanum evolvulifolium
Light Moderate, indirect light or bright shade; avoid harsh direct sun.
Temperature Night: about 14–18°C; day: 23–30°C; avoid frost.
Humidity High (60–80%), especially in terrariums or greenhouses.
Air circulation Good airflow to prevent rot in humid conditions.
Substrate/mount Cork mount or small basket with sphagnum moss, perlite, fine bark.
Watering Keep moist; frequent light watering or daily misting if mounted.
Growth habit Trailing or climbing vine, up to about 25–30 cm spread.

Pruning is minimal but occasional trimming can keep the plant compact and encourage branching, especially if grown in a hanging or terrarium setting.
