Anoectochilus albolineatus is a striking jewel orchid prized for its foliage over flowers. Native to Southeast Asian rainforests, it features velvety dark green to bronze leaves with shimmering silver-white veins that create an iridescent effect.
Description
This compact terrestrial orchid grows 10-15 cm tall, with ovate leaves reaching 10-20 cm long and 2-3 cm wide. The glossy leaves display bold white or silver venation against a deep green background, often with a metallic sheen from light refraction in leaf layers. Small bell-shaped green or white flowers with frilly lips appear in autumn, but the foliage remains the main attraction year
Care Guide
Keep the substrate evenly moist using soft or rainwater, allowing the top to dry slightly between waterings to prevent root rot. Fertilize sparingly with diluted orchid feed every 4-6 weeks during growth, and mist surroundings (not leaves) to maintain airflow. Repot every 1-2 years in a wide, shallow pot with humus-rich orchid mix including sphagnum moss and leaf litter for drainage.
Growing Conditions
Provide low to bright indirect light or gentle shade—direct sun scorches leaves, while low light enhances vein color but slows growth. Maintain warm temperatures of 16-24°C (ideal), avoiding drops below 12°C or drafts, with high humidity (70-90%) via terrariums or humidifiers. It thrives in pH 5.5-6 soil in stable, misty environments mimicking forest floors at 300-1200m elevation.
Adaptability
Anoectochilus albolineatus is relatively easy for beginners in humid setups like terrariums, tolerating 15-30°C ranges and creeping or vining habits based on light. It struggles in dry air (<50% humidity) prone to mites or dull leaves, and prefers minimal disturbance as a primary forest species. In Bengaluru’s climate, succeed indoors with humidity trays or enclosures.
