Trichomanes javanicum, commonly known as the Java filmy fern or Borneo fern (sometimes synonymous with Cephalomanes javanicum), is a delicate epiphytic or lithophytic fern from the Hymenophyllaceae family. Native to Southeast Asia including Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and surrounding regions, it features extremely thin, translucent fronds that are often just one or two cells thick, giving it a filmy appearance. The plant grows from a stiff, woody, erect rhizome forming a rosette of fronds, which can slowly develop into clumps over time; fronds are semi-translucent and highly prone to desiccation without constant moisture.

Care Instructions

This fern demands precise, high-humidity care mimicking its tropical habitat, making it ideal for terrariums or vivariums rather than open air.

  • Humidity: Maintain extremely high levels (near 100%) at all times; frequent misting is essential to hydrate the thin fronds and prevent shriveling—use a sealed environment with no airflow.
  • Watering: Keep substrate perpetually moist using pure, low-TDS water like distilled or reverse osmosis (RO); avoid tap water to prevent mineral buildup.
  • Substrate: Grow on live sphagnum moss, wood, or rocks—never in standing water long-term, as it may decompose submersed.
  • Fertilizer: Apply sparingly, such as a foliar spray of ¼-strength urea-free orchid fertilizer or 1-2 slow-release pellets like Osmocote Plus; overfeeding harms growth.
  • Propagation: Divide the rhizome carefully during active growth.

Adaptability

Trichomanes javanicum has limited adaptability outside its preferred humid, shaded niches and struggles in typical home conditions.

  • Thrives in intermediate to warm temperatures (20-27°C or 68-81°F), favoring warmth but sensitive to excess heat.
  • Poor tolerance for drying out, bright light, or low humidity—fronds desiccate rapidly without protection.
  • Best suited for closed terrariums; not adaptable to aquariums (decomposes underwater) or dry air.
  • pH range of 5.5-8 with soft to medium water hardness.

Growing Conditions

Replicate its natural moist, shaded forest floor or tree trunk habitat for success.

  • Light: Low, indirect, or shaded—sheltered from direct sun to avoid scorching the translucent fronds.
  • Temperature: 20-27°C (68-81°F); cool to warm, but consistent.
  • Humidity and Ventilation: 90-100% humidity in a still, sealed setup—no fans or drafts.
  • Aquatic Notes: Sometimes sold as an “aqua fern,” but prefers emersed humid conditions over submersion.

In summary, Trichomanes javanicum rewards patient growers with its unique filmy beauty in a properly humid terrarium, but its exacting needs for constant moisture and shade make it challenging for beginners.
