Begonia lichenora is a rare, miniature species native to the montane forests of Borneo, specifically Sarawak. It is characterized by its small, round to slightly ovate leaves with a bright green color and a subtle lichen-like texture, often showing a faint blue iridescence in low light. The plant is a creeping or trailing type, growing into a dense mat with many branches, and it produces tiny white flowers.

Description
Begonia lichenora has tiny oblique leaves with rounded and slightly fleshy tips. Its leaves have a shiny surface that resembles glitter. The plant typically grows to about 9 to 12 cm in height (pot included), with a compact growth habit suitable for terrariums or terrarium-like environments. It naturally grows climbing on shady, humid slopes.

Caring
Begonia lichenora is very delicate and can easily “melt” or wither if care is not carefully managed. It is sensitive to water on its foliage and stems, which should be avoided as it encourages damage. The plant requires high humidity levels above 70-80%, ideally maintained in a sealed or controlled humidity environment such as a sealed bin or terrarium. Moderate to low indirect light is best, with low light enhancing the iridescent leaf coloration. It grows best at temperatures between 15°C and 27°C (59°F to 81°F).

Adaptability
While Begonia lichenora is somewhat adaptable to different substrates, it thrives in a loose, organic-rich substrate blend such as a mix of sphagnum moss, bark, and leaf litter or a well-draining potting soil with live moss on top. It can tolerate slight variations as long as humidity and moisture are consistent. However, cuttings are delicate and may initially melt or lose leaves before establishing. The plant grows slowly at first but becomes stronger and faster after adapting to its environment. It is recommended to propagate periodically to maintain fresh healthy plants since entire colonies can crash suddenly.

Growing Conditions
Light: Prefers low to medium indirect light, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorch.

Water: Keep moist but avoid waterlogging; water at the base and avoid wetting leaves.

Humidity: High humidity >75% is essential.

Temperature: Warm to cool range from 15°C to 27°C.

Soil: Well-draining, organic-rich loose substrate suited for moisture retention but not soggy.

Propagation: Best propagated by cuttings, which require patience due to initial vulnerability.

In summary, Begonia lichenora is a delicate, miniature begonia species requiring precise humidity, indirect light, and careful watering. It is suited for terrarium or greenhouse cultivation where warm, stable, and humid conditions are maintained. Its unique lichen-like foliage and blue iridescence make it a prized plant for collectors and enthusiasts
