Begonia Ocean Lust

Bring the serene mystery of the deep sea into your home with the Begonia ‘Ocean Lust’. A stunning cultivar renowned for its otherworldly, shimmering foliage, this plant is a masterpiece of natural aesthetics. With its deep, oceanic tones and delicate luster, it is a must-have for any collector of rare tropical flora.

The Botanical Profile

• Family: Begoniaceae

• Origins: A cultivar derived from the diverse and expansive Begonia genus, which originates from tropical and subtropical forests across Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

• Specialty: Prized primarily for its exotic, “luminous” leaf patterns that mimic the light reflecting off ocean currents.

Features & Identification

The ‘Ocean Lust’ is best identified by its asymmetrical, heart-shaped leaves with a metallic, iridescent sheen. The coloration typically spans deep forest greens, teals, and subtle silvery undertones, creating a “lustrous” effect under indirect lighting. Unlike common varieties, its texture is uniquely refined, often appearing velvety or slightly wax-coated, which helps it retain moisture in its native rainforest understory environment.

Care & Cultivation

To keep your ‘Ocean Lust’ thriving, emulate its natural forest-floor home:

• Light: Prefers bright, indirect sunlight. Avoid harsh, direct sun, which can scorch its delicate, jewel-toned leaves.

• Watering: Water when the top 50–75% of the soil has dried. Ensure your pot has excellent drainage to prevent root rot—our signature JB Greens Potting Media is specifically blended to provide the perfect balance of moisture retention and aeration.

• Humidity: This plant thrives in high humidity (ideally above 70%). It is an excellent candidate for terrariums or glass displays.

• Nutrients: Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced, liquid houseplant fertilizer. Enhance your plant’s vitality with our JB Greens Plant Tonics, designed to provide essential micronutrients for deep, vibrant foliage color.

Terrarium & Paludarium Excellence

The ‘Ocean Lust’ is a superstar in enclosed displays. Because it enjoys high humidity and filtered light, it is perfectly suited for:

• Terrariums: Its compact growth and striking leaf color make it a focal point in a closed, glass-enclosed ecosystem.

• Paludariums: It adds an architectural, “jungle-floor” aesthetic when placed in the terrestrial zones of a paludarium.

Professional Recommendations from JB Greens

Every rare plant deserves premium care. At JB Greens, we believe the foundation of a healthy plant is the growing medium. Our custom potting blends are engineered to prevent the compaction that often suffocates begonia roots. Pair your ‘Ocean Lust’ with our signature plant tonics to ensure your plant maintains that signature “oceanic” gloss and vigorous growth year-round.

Note: Like most members of the Begoniaceae family, Begonia ‘Ocean Lust’ is beautiful to behold but should be kept away from curious pets and small children, as it can be toxic if ingested.
