Macodes petola, commonly called the Jewel Orchid, is a terrestrial (ground-growing) orchid from the humid tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, notably Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, New Guinea, Vanuatu, and Sumatra. The plant is prized almost entirely for its spectacular, velvety foliage rather than its flowers. The leaves are dark green to olive green, with intricate, lightning-like veins that appear gold, copper, or white, giving the impression of sparkling crystals or precious metal threaded through each leaf—a look that inspired its “jewel” nickname. The leaf surface is velvety, soft, and displays complex, net-like vein patterns. Leaves grow in a compact rosette close to the ground and reach 3–5cm in diameter. Flowers are small, with red-brown petals edged in yellow and a white lip, typically blooming in late fall or winter, but are not the main attraction.

Caring for Macodes petola
Light: Prefers medium to low, indirect light—bright but never direct sunlight—to mimic the shaded rainforest floor.

Temperature: Thrives at 65–80°F (18–27°C) and should never be exposed to temperatures below 15°C. Consistent warmth is vital.

Humidity: High humidity (60–90%) is best—Macodes petola grows naturally in very humid environments. In homes, use a pebble tray, humidifier, or keep within a terrarium.

Water: Needs regular, even moisture. Water thoroughly, then allow the substrate to dry slightly—never let it dry out completely. Avoid waterlogged soil or “wet feet.”

Substrate: Prefers loose, well-aerated substrate: a blend of orchid bark and sphagnum moss works best, but other loose, airy mixes are suitable. Good root aeration is essential.

Airflow: Benefits from occasional airflow around roots and leaves, especially in terrariums. Avoid sealed environments for extended periods.

Fertilizer: Use a weak orchid fertilizer monthly during the growing season; do not over-fertilize.

Potting: Grow in small pots or terrariums. Pot size limits spread, as Macodes petola has a creeping habit with a rhizomatous root system.

Toxicity: Non-toxic to humans and pets.

Adaptability
Macodes petola is surprisingly adaptable:

Will tolerate lower humidity if acclimated gradually, but leaf color and growth may suffer.

Can thrive as a houseplant in warm, humid rooms or closed terrariums; avoid drafty areas and sudden temperature drops.

It is suitable for “bioactive” terrariums, paludariums, and as part of indoor plant displays.

Slow-growing and well-contained in cultivation—not invasive.
