Plants Care After Transit

Plants are no different from human – we suffer from jetlag after long transit. Yet, some plants are more adapting while some are not. After a long journey from our garden to your place, plants are likely to be exhausted, dehydrated; and stressed causing yellow / brown leaves, slightly dry roots, or even rotting. Don’t worry, they are still alive, your timely care will help to rehabilitate your dream plants. Here are the tips to rescue your jetlag green baby.

List of basic items you may need:

  • Scissor
  • Pot
  • Cultivation materials such as Spangnum Moss, Perlite, Peat Moss, etc.
  • Fungicide or antibacterial chemicals for plants
  • Rooting Hormone
  • Transparent Plastic containers / bags.

Unbox your plants as soon as possible after you received the package. Time is essence here. The sooner you take care of plants, the easier the plants get rehabilitated.  Please gently remove the cover and avoid cutting plants. If plants arrive in bad condition or different plant received, please contact us immediately with photos and videos during unboxing and root inspection to get help with refunds or replacements according to our refund policy.

Indian Shipments:

Most of the Indian shipments would be in nursery pots. We do not remove or change the pots or replace the growing media / soil in which plants are grownup in our nursery. We recommend our Indian customers to keep the plants with pot in an enclosed humid environment with indirect sunlight for 2-4 weeks before repotting to acclimate with new environment. Do not repot plants until many new healthy roots appear after reaching at your location. Repotting is necessary only when the roots are grown beyond the existing pots. If you don’t have enclosed humid environment, 1) Place the potted plant on tray filled with water. 2) Enclose in transparent plastic bag (Clear Zip-lock bags recommended). The sealed plastic bag will maintain the humidity in the micro-environment.

For International shipments:

  • Inspect the unboxed plants, clean the plants with running water and trim all the rots on the leaves and roots. The most important part of the plant is its roots. For any claims of refunds / replacements, a clear root inspection video is compulsory.
  • Spray fungicide and / or antibacterial chemicals as per the dosage suggested by supplying vendors. Please be aware that the plants may die if you overdose the chemicals.
  • Dehydrate your plants by keeping the roots in the RO water with optional rooting hormones. All aroids, you may keep plants for at least 2 -3 weeks until many healthy new roots appear. Make sure that you replaces water daily.
  • For non-water loving plants use moss.
  • Room temperature water reduces the chance of rot
  • Do not fertilize the plants until many healthy roots appear.

Alocasia / Anthuriums / Aroids / Bonsai (Woody Plant) / Hoya / Ivy / Ferns / Peperomia / Philodendron:

Conditions after transit: yellowish leaves; dehydrated; loss of leaves

Cure: Trim the yellowish / rotten leaves; then soak the whole plant in water for 12 hours (6 hours for Perperomia) then put it in a pot filled with the well drained substrates (for Fern, PH value shall be in the range of 5.5 -6.0).  In 2 weeks’ to 5 weeks’ time, your plant will revive!

Special notes about Hoya – As an epiphytes, hoya does not have a strong root system; it will be easily damaged under scorching sun and cold weather.

Begonia / Ardisia / Heuchera / Sonerila / Labisia & Other Terrarium Plants:

Special Care needed! 1) Plant requires immediate repotting (i.e: moist sphagnum moss) upon removal from plastic tray. We recommend sphagnum moss mixed with perlite or peat based potting mix with good drainage wit added extra perlite in it 2) Place the potted plant on tray filled with water. 3) Enclose in plastic bag (Clear Zip-lock bags recommended). The sealed plastic bag will maintain the humidity in the micro-environment. ***Begonia requires extremely high humidity! Failure to complete the above steps will result in wrinkled leaves and ultimate death!

Conditions after transit: Juiceless; mushy leaves; some loss of leaves

Cure: Trim the rotten or mushy leaves; then soak the whole plant in water for 12 hours; then plant it in a pot filled with moisturisng substrate which is 100% saturated with water (for Heuchera, no particular preference for substrate as long as it’s relatively acidic). Lastly, place your potted plant in an enclosed humid environment with indirect sunlight,  then leave it there 7-14 days. Make sure the substrate is always saturated with water. 2-4weeks later a healthy plant is waving hand at you!

Sanservieria

Conditions after transit: Dehydrated leaves

Cure: Plant it in well drained substrate then water it.  Leaves will then revive!

Potting Your Plants:

The right choice of potting media / mix depends on many factors. We suggest that you use the same cultivation materials that you are already used or familiar with and the same watering routine.

You have to consider following factors to choose right cultivation materials such as Environment, temperature, humidity, watering routine, PH stability,  water drainage, water retention, air ventilation, nutrients, etc.

It is recommended to put pine bark or LECA balls at the bottom of the pot for good drainage, that will save your plants from rotting.

Planting the plant too deep under the cultivation material will make the plant prone to rotting. For anthuriums, it is a must that the tap root portion of plant is above the cultivation material.

Be Patient. You need to wait around 1-2 months to let the plant develop strong vitality and fully adapt to your new environment. Partially open the container for your plants to adapt to lower humidity environment for a few weeks. The ring the plants out, add fertilizers, and let them thrive in their new home.
